EMV is the technical standard for card payments and ensures that card data are transmitted securely. Authentication and data transfer are performed via a microprocessor chip.
Card data are saved on the credit card or debit card in two ways: on the magnetic strip and on the chip. The latest technical standard is the forgery-proof chip. If a payment terminal is equipped with a chip reader, authentication occurs automatically via the EMV chip and not via the technically outdated magnetic strip.
When paying with EMV, cardholders identify themselves by entering their personal identification number, or PIN for short. This provides a much higher degree of protection in the event of loss or theft than just a signature. It will take several years yet before payment by PIN establishes itself as the global standard. Nevertheless, the payment terminals of SIX Payment Services are already fitted out with EMV chip readers as standard
